The 2018 $67,000 Group 2 Spolly’s Syndications Traralgon Cup meeting set down for this Saturday has been brought forward to Friday night, 26 January.
The decision to transfer the meeting to Australia Day evening came about after the expected extreme temperatures forecast for Saturday.
“GRV’s Hot Weather Policy states that if the temperature reaches 38 degrees three hours before the commencement of a meeting, that meeting may be abandoned. To avoid this – especially considering the huge night of racing – a decision has been made to move the program to the Friday night,” Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO, Alan Clayton said.
Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club Manager, Steven Clarke said that despite the date change there would still be something for everyone on Cup night.
“We understand the inconvenience this causes, but the safety and welfare of greyhounds, our participants and staff must always be paramount,” Clarke said.
“Nonetheless, an outstanding night of racing is ahead of us on Friday, and despite the date change we have no doubt that the Traralgon community will once again get behind its home Cup.
“Families will be amply catered for with Turbo’s Trackside Corner with inflatables, show bags, Gamehound interactive game on the giant screen, handball competitions, jumping castles, face painting and a silent disco, to name a few activities.
“There will also be plenty of activities for the whole family with free entertainment, free kids’ zones, giveaways and prizes.”
The past two Traralgon Cups have been won by local greyhounds – Pantera Nera (2016) and Jesaulenko (2017) – with five of the eight finalists this year being from the Gippsland region.
Admission is free on Friday night with gates to open at 6pm and Race 1 to be held shortly after 7pm.
The Spolly’s Syndications Traralgon Cup is the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival series, which also includes Sale, Cranbourne and Warragul, with a $20,000 pool of bonus prizemoney up for grabs for the highest points earners.
TGRC, along with sister clubs Cranbourne, Sale and Warragul, contribute more than $40 million to the Gippsland economy each year, providing hundreds of local jobs.
