The Great Chase Traralgon
|
The Traralgon Heats of the Great Chase have been run and
won. 60 people from 7 different Community groups were track side to watch their greyhound
run. A marquee was provided trackside so they were able to see their dogs up close.
Congratulations to
Latrobe Community Health who are now $500 better off after
Quick Drink won heat 1 in a sizzling time of 29.99. Trained by
Will McMahon of Darnum,
Quick Drink was greeted by clients from Latrobe Community Health after
the race. They were thrilled with their greyhounds performance. The pressure
was on so
Will McMahon didn't want to let his other community group
down from
Yallambee. In Heat 2 he had
Dr. Rex from box 1. The greyhound jumped and lead all the way to
win in 30.11, a chorus of cheers came from the Yallambee clients. What a
fantastic training double, well done.
A big thanks to our local TAB outlet "The Grand Junction"
for sponsoring the Great chase.

2008 Top Cat Video Puppy Classic
|
Odds on favourite falls in Traralgon's Greyhound Puppy Classic.
There was a sensation in Friday's top Traralgon Greyhound feature - Topcat Video
Puppy Classic Final.
Odds on favourite, Lochinui for Jason Thompson was running 4th into the back
straight, and making ground quickly, when he appeared to collide with Gun Hand - causing the $1.50
chance to tumble over - much to the groans of punters on and off course.
Race was won by the speedy Cyclone Ned who came across quickly from box 8 to
lead all the way over Accordian and Hot Puzzle in the excellent time of 29.86, for the 513
metres.
Cyclone Ned (Big Daddy Cool - Cyclone Kelly) is owned by Lynette Cameron and trained
at Keysborough by Geoff Mitchell.
For the record - Lochinui picked himself up and finished the race, but no doubt with
a few aches and pains.

2007 Chris Humphrey Office National Cup
Consolation.
|
The
2007 Chris Humphrey Office National Cup Consolation was conducted on Friday night 14th
September. The field consisted of greyhounds who had just missed out on qualifying for the
Traralgon cup. Box 1 Winoki, Box 2 Kirsha's Comet, Box 3 Lightning Cowboy, Box 4 Avon
Lyla May, Box 5 Flinders Street, Box 6 Turilee, Box 7 Pure Burst and Box 8 Jamazz. The
race had 2 scratchings with Avon Lyla May and Pure Burst, the reserves Absolutely Osca and
Stetson Shiraz lined up instead.
Punter's
decided that it was a race between Peter Giles' Winoki and Tony Tabone's Jamazz.
Jamazz contested the Cup Consolation in 2006 and came third, so owner Charlie Dobson was for a
better result this year.
Winoki jumped to the lead taking the 1st split in 5.54, Jamazz had also
jumped well and crossed to the rails. Winoki was still in front at the 2nd split 16.82 but
Jamazz went around him and put the pedal to the metal. Jamazz won by 10.25 lengths in a
blistering 29.89 best on night. Winoki came second and Absolutely Osca third.
Jamazz takes home the $3500 for 1st place. Well done dad thanks for
cutting my dog off out of the boxes.
Paw note: He is the son of former Traralgon Cup Winner
Elgrando.
George Edwin Bryant Memorial
Silver Fox
Award
|
Toongabbie trainer Pamela Tabone, 35, is the second winner of the Ned
Bryant ‘Silver Fox’ award. Tabone received the honour on Sandown Cup
night.
Instigated by the GRV Board, the award is for outstanding potential in
the training, breeding and promotion of greyhound racing.
The following is Tabone’s
recollection of her greyhound racing
genesis…
“My dad (Tony)
trained a couple of greyhounds in the late ’60s and early ’70s. I remember
playing in the backyard of our Traralgon house with the greyhounds. He was one
of the original committeemen that started the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club.
His good greyhound died and he gave up the dogs in 1977 when I was about
five.
“But in 2001 he asked me if I wanted
to get a greyhound with him. I said yes, so he bought a pup. We had to play the
waiting game for it to grow up.
“In April 2002 our bitch Smurf’s
Velocity had her first start. I would travel with dad to all the trials and
races.
“I wasn’t content to just catch the
dog; I wanted to train a greyhound. I met John Westerlo at Warragul in July 2002
and he sold me my first racing greyhound, Yobro, for $1000. It came second
in its first start and won its next for me. That win was enough to hook me
for life.
“My first good greyhound was Mr Tab.
Mum (Carol) and I went into partnership; she reared him and I was to train him.
Mr Tab showed me what a good greyhound could do. He won in the city for me and
gave mum and I our biggest thrill when he came runner-up in the 2005 Group 1
Silver Chief. Unfortunately, five starts later he broke his hock at Cranbourne.
I was shattered and could not put him down. I dropped him off at Keysborough Vet
Clinic that night and Chris Boemo operated on him. The next day I didn’t want to
get out of bed. I didn’t want to go near the other dogs; I was going to give up.
My husband made me get out of bed and do the dogs. Chris said the operation went
well but there was only a 20 per cent chance of ever racing
again.
“It was
at this time my other greyhound, Junior’s Gypsy, ‘sensed’ that he had to step up
to the mark and take over from Mr Tab. Junior’s Gypsy won the 2005 Traralgon
Puppy Classic in a sizzling 29.62. He went on to win many races in the country
and the city. He came second in the 2005 National Sprint Championship state
final to Pure Octane at The Meadows. We travelled off toWentworth Park for the NSC grand final, being the
underdog. Junior’s Gypsy didn’t let me down; he chased his heart out and was
only beaten one length by Pure Octane – thus giving Victoria the quinella.
Junior’s Gypsy, who broke down at Sandown in May last year, won $68,000 during
his career.
“Since then I have trained many
greyhounds. Mr Tab made it back to the track and won more races for me. He is
now at home as my pet dog.
“At the moment my best is Public
Nuisance. She made a semi-final of the 2006 Group 1 Laurels at only her fourth
start. She has won many city races and recently won a heat of the Golden Easter
Egg at Wentworth
Park. She finished fourth
in the Easter Egg Consolation. She recently finished third in a heat of the
Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park and was a reserve for the
final.
“In only five years I have been lucky
to train these and other dogs that have given me much
pleasure.
“In May 2004 I started working at the
Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club as executive assistant. I can’t believe that I
am so lucky to work in the industry that I love so
much.”
Pawnote: The ‘Silver
Fox’ pays homage to George Edwin (“Ned”) Bryant, a loveable larrikin and one of
Australia’s greatest trainers who
died aged 76 on May 18, 1997.
Bryant’s “Silver Fox”
sobriquet was an obvious reference to Australia’s legendary Davis Cup captain of the
1950s and 1960s, Harry Hopman. And like his tennis counterpart, Bryant was a
master tactician who turned greyhound training into an art
form.
In a distinguished
50-year association with the sport, Bryant won virtually every major feature on
the Victorian greyhound racing calendar with his canine
protégés.
Bryant considered
the 1985
Melbourne
Cup quinella (Sydney Dingaan-Shining
Chariot) and 1991 Australian Cup (Franklin Deano) as his highest training
achievements.
The Ned Bryant ‘Silver Fox’ is
presented annually on the night of the Group 1 Sandown Cup (715m) –
Australia
’s richest staying event.
Last year’s inaugural winner was young Yarragon mentor Scott
Holmes.

On Friday 18th May the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club
conducted heats of the GRV VBIS Grade 5 (1-4 wins) for greyhounds with 1 - 14 starts.
Restricted to Victorian Bred Greyhounds only.
The first heat was taken out by Pallet Express.
Exiting box 2 the B Selleck trained Pallet Express wasn't the quickest
away. Winning the start was Web of Thunder in 5.45 but Pallet Express put
the pedal to the metal and clocked 17.10 over the back. Continuing his
lead he won in 30.36 by 2, 1/4 lengths to Sheoak Kristy and another 2,3/4
lengths to Merrimel. In the final Pallet Express has drawn box 6.
Rosedale trainer Jason Matthews saw his chaser Far
Out Shiraz return to form at Sale on 13th May, winning a 520m in a sizzling
29.32. So when his greyhound drew box 1 for the second heat punters
decided he would go around at $1.70 favourite. Busy Being Bossy jumped the
best, taking the 1st split 5.50 but Far Out Shiraz railed up and took off.
Leading by 3 lengths on the home turn Far Out Shiraz looked certain to win but a
fast finishing Chinese Princess made a dash for the line. Far Out Shiraz
won by a neck to Chinese Princess in 30.33 and Powercord was third only a length
away.
The 3rd heat was won by Reg Boyce's
greyhound Remo Grande. The Rex Hunt charity greyhound "Bad Santa" looked
liked he had the race to himself clocking 16.98 at the 2nd split. Running
on Remo Grande grabbed him at the line to win by a neck in 30.57, with Fool
Flight only 1 length in arrears.
The last heat was won by local
trainer Phil Rowley with Akina Prince. Jumping well from box 7 Akina
Prince was just behind Hotline Style at the 1st split. After this Akina
Prince let loose and clocked 17 dead at the back split. He went on to win
well in 30.35 by 3 lengths to Hotline Style and Dr. Mauve came third.
The final will be conducted
on Friday 25th May.

Cromlah
Bale takes home the 2006 Cup!
On
Friday 17th November the Final of the 2006 Chris Humphrey Office National Traralgon
Cup was conducted. With a crowd of over 1400 people in attendance the stage was set for
a fantastic race.
The field consisted of top quality
greyhounds. Listed in box order: Ayon Lyla May, Cromlah Bale, Xrate, See You
Later, River Man, Traction Control, My Wild Courage and Willy's
Buster.
With so much early pace in the race it
was all about the dash to the first corner. At box rise the Johnny Nordon
trained Avon Lyla May flew out of box 1. Lauren Gorman's chaser Willy's
Buster also jumped well from box 8. Avon Lyla May was just in front at the
1st split registering 5.51.
Willy's Buster couldn't quite get
accross Avon Lyla May who railed to perfection taking the second split in 16.88,
mean while Cromlah Bale wasn't far behind the leaders.
Around the home corner Avon Lyla May
kicked again opening up her lead by 2 lengths to Willy's Buster. In a
nail biting finish the strong finishing Cromlah Bale kept grinding away up
the home straight and caught her on the line to win by a neck in
30.21. Willy's Buster came in third.
Cromlah Bale is trained by Andrea Dailly from Anakie and
owned by Paul Wheeler, they take home the $20,000 in prizemoney. Cromlah
Bale is a black dog whelped on 27th July 2004. He is a quality greyhound,
Sired by the champion Brett Lee out of
Mirada Bale. He has started 33 times for 14 wins and 9 seconds.
This win makes it back to back group wins after taking out the Group 1 Vic
Peter's Classic at Wentworth Park a fortnight ago.
Congratulations to the connections of
Cromlah Bale.

Life Members &
Memorial
Race
meeting |
The Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club Committee held the
annual Life Member and Memorial Race meeting on Sunday 2nd July.
If you have ever been a part of a committee, you would be
aware of the amount of time and energy that is needed to run a club. Without these people giving their time
voluntarily or representing the club we would not have a first class racing
facility. Each race on today’s
program is named after a life member or a person that has passed away. It is an acknowledgement of their
outstanding contribution to the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club.
Andrew
Wood
Andrew Wood AKA
Woody is a life member and current member of the committee. Woody has been on the committee for
approximately 23 years and has also been a past President. Over the years he has helped on many
working bees and closed the boxes hundreds of times for trials. He has trained greyhounds for many
years. On race night you can find Woody at the bar.
Arch
Franklin
Arch was one of
the founding members of the club.
Over the years he generously donated trophies and his time to the
club. He considered the Traralgon
track to be his home track. Arch
trained a greyhound called Meeniyan Pete which was a FFA at Traralgon. It raced for 12 wins in a row here and
also won Greyhound of the year.
Ron
Williamson
Ron Williamson
AKA Whip is a life member. He has
been a long serving member on the committee. A regular at working bees and trials.
Now a days Whip likes to make sure the Glenview Park Buildings are all locked up
and lights switched off after the race meeting. Whip likes a bit of punt but
isn’t going to give up his day.
Bill
Chapman
Bill Chapman was
a life member and has just recently passed away. He was on the committee for 13 years. He
was a well respected man and his opinion was always valued at committee
meetings. Being a retired Bank Manager he kept a close eye on the club’s
financial welfare. If a working bee
was on he was the first to volunteer. Bill trained greyhounds for many
years and enjoyed considerable success in this sport. He also enjoyed punting for the
syndicate at TGRC.
Longmore
Family
Leo, Peter and
Barry Longmore are life members.
They were instrumental in getting the club up and running in 1973. Leo cleaned and washed all the bricks
that were taken from the town hall so they could be used for the Kennel
complex. They have all served as
President on the committee.
Without Leo, Peter and Barry the club would not be what it is today.
Barry is also a sponsor of the club with
his business HillBilly bins. Barry
still trains greyhounds and he is here most race nights at the bar with
Woody.
Lionel
Richards
Lionel and he
wife Lorna Richards were instrumental in the early days of the club. They would clean the kennels, wash race
rugs and coats, run
raffles. They were highly regarded
and awarded life membership at TGRC.
Noel
Thorburn
Affectionately
known as “Nooky”. Tremendous worker
and contributor to the club for many years. He was always available to do the “hard
yards” for the club be it at Committee meetings or working bees. He had huge success as a trainer winning
the 1984 Traralgon Cup with Forever Alert.
Stan
Johnson
Fondly
remembered as one of nature’s gentlemen.
Stan served on the committee for over 20 years and when Stan “spoke”
people listened. He had a great
memory for greyhound form and trained greyhounds himself for a number of
years.
Don
Hill
Don was honoured
with his life membership of the Club 3 years ago. Don is the “Pommy” guy with
the cap and glasses, always a willing worker for the club. He has owned and
trained greyhounds for more years than he probably cares to remember. Don and his wife Betty leave on an overseas trip for the
home country very soon.
